Willmore Wilderness Park, Rocky Mountains, Alberta, Canada

Trail in to Eagle's Nest Pass Region

This trail into Willmore starts at the Rock Lake trailhead. It's a dirt road that follows through forested hills and that was built 50 or more years ago. As such, it's the price one pays to get to the great hiking and riding areas 12 miles (20 km) in from the Rock Lake Trailhead. It's not until you get about 8 miles (13 km) in that you begin the see the mountains.

For some years, we've gone into Willmore on horse assisted hiking trips – the horses carry the food and camp gear while we hike with light day packs. Every other day is a moving day where we hike from camp to camp. And the in-between days are layover days, where we do day hikes from camp and return to the same camp.

This is Rocky Notness' outfit, one of many outfitters our group of hikers have used over the years. My rating: 5 stars of 5.
