Orchid Anatomy

Orchids have three distinguishing features:
Three Sepals. The sepals look like petals, but are the remains of the flower bud. There are usually three sepals. The size can vary, but in this flower are equal size and symmetrically arranged around the flower.
Three Petals. Orchids always have three petals. Two are normal and the third is a special structure called a lip or labellum. The lip is used by the flower to provide a landing platform for it's pollinator.
A Column. This is a finger like structure, seen in this flower on the lip, which contains the orchid's male and female reproductive organs.
