Masaoka Tsunenori Shiki (1867 - 1902) is a recent haiku poet. He was born in Matsuyama and died of tuberculosis of spine. In his last seven years, he had to be confined to his bed; however, during that time he accomplished three of his great works on modern literature: Haiku Reform, Tanka reform, Advocating Sketch-from-Life-Prose. One of four haiku masters most often mentioned [the others are Basho, Buson, Issa], Shiki wrote about eighteen thousand haiku and created a refocusing on the haiku form of poetry.
